The Benefits of a Mezzanine Floor for Your Business

The Benefits of a Mezzanine Floor for Your Business

A warehouse owner lacking in space will often consider purchasing additional material handling equipment with different capabilities or they might prefer to have additional warehouse racking constructed to excessive heights in a bid to maximise the space they already have. But there is another storage solution that’ll work in much the same way that is often overlooked – the mezzanine floor.

So what, exactly, can a mezzanine floor offer a warehouse owner, why should you consider constructing a mezzanine floor over racking and where can you acquire this particular structure?

Allows you to maximise vertical space

Although it can be argued that racking does the same thing, a mezzanine floor will allow for complete utilisation. Additional racking will only be worthwhile if you have the stock to fill it completely, which isn’t always the case.

A mezzanine floor can provide a warehouse with an entire, vast, additional level that sits off the floor, much like a balcony or a theatre stage, for example. This allows for items to be stored underneath the mezzanine floor as well as having full use of the space on top. In effect, it will increase the square footage of your warehouse without the excessive cost of extending your premises.

It’s more cost-effective than relocating or purchasing additional premises

Increasing storage space in such an inexpensive way will help to save a warehouse money further down the line. Where mezzanine floor construction isn’t nearly as costly as having an extension added, relocating or purchasing an additional site, it is a worthwhile investment.

Its sole purpose is to provide a warehouse with extra storage, helping to improve layout and organisation as a whole. As a result, it will also improve efficiency and productivity throughout your warehouse as your employees will be able to locate and retrieve stock as and when required.

They’re semi-permanent, flexible storage solutions

It’s quite difficult to know exactly where your business will be in five, ten or fifteen years time, to the point where a warehouse owner might be reluctant to purchase additional property or relocate to a larger site for fear of losing money in the long run. A mezzanine floor will allow a warehouse owner to stay where they are for at least the next few years.

However, if a warehouse owner did decide to relocate, then the mezzanine floor can be disassembled, transported to the new site and reconstructed to continue to provide a warehouse with additional storage as and when needed. It will be a worthwhile asset to have no matter how big or small your premises might be as you can never be sure when you might need extra storage space.

It can be used in several different ways, not just as a storage facility

Depending on the size and type of mezzanine floor you choose to have constructed, it can be used in a number of different ways in order to effortlessly meet the needs and requirements of every warehouse, regardless of the industry you work in. A mezzanine floor can be used for the following:

  • Storage – it provides additional storage space which is invaluable in a warehouse
  • Workspace – you can construct offices on the top level of the mezzanine floor
  • Tiered mezzanines – multiple layers can be added to a singular mezzanine floor

It can add value to your warehouse

Adding a mezzanine floor, or more than one mezzanine floor, to your warehouse will increase storage capacity which, in turn, will increase the value of your premises – great news if you own the warehouse.

If you’re renting your warehouse, then you’ll still be able to construct a mezzanine floor without adding to the property value of the premises you’re renting. If you have paid for the mezzanine floor, it can be dismantled and taken with you to another location if needed.
