How to Choose Material Handling Technology

How to Choose Material Handling Technology

Ask yourself “will this product meet or exceed my expectations?”

Is your new piece of technology going to be worth your while? Will it transform the way in which you work? Is it something that is going to impress you beyond belief? Will it become the new piece of technology or equipment that you don’t go back from?

These are all questions you should be asking yourself when it comes to choosing material handling or technology for your warehouse. If the answer to any of them is ‘probably not’, then it’s not the right piece of technology or equipment for you, your employees or for your warehouse.

Make sure that it will remain relevant for the foreseeable future

Make sure that your new technology and equipment is relevant both at the time of purchase and for the foreseeable future. There’s no point in wasting money and time choosing material handling equipment or technology that can only be made use of for a few months, maybe a year, maximum. Where this might not be so important if your new technology, software or equipment isn’t costing you too much, it’s most certainly something to think about if you’re looking at spending a considerable amount of money.

Choose the technology that will deliver the best return on investment (ROI)

There’s no point in buying equipment or implementing technology that is both expensive and rarely used. You need to make sure that you’re choosing technology that is going to be used regularly and that is going to make the job or your employees easier and more efficient. Essentially, it needs to offer the biggest return on investment (ROI).

This ensures that you’re not losing money or time by investing in the wrong piece of equipment or technology. Cross-reference it, if you need to, with your finance department, and see where KPIs can be improved with the implementation of new technology or equipment.

Pick the right equipment for the job

You need to assess your needs and then choose the right material handling equipment for the job. If you have tall and deep warehouse racking, then you need to choose a forklift or a reach truck that has the capacity to do the job. This is the same whether you’re looking into different machinery or into different pieces of technology and warehouse software that is designed to help you get the job done.

If you choose the wrong solutions, then you could be wasting time and money in the process. Play things safe, do some research and listen to those who work within your business who are in the know about what your warehouse needs.

You could do this by sending out surveys or scheduling meetings to talk, specifically, about that side of things. Ask your operators, your managers and your team leaders what they need to make their operations more efficient and productive and then go from there.

Consider the space you have available in your warehouse

There’s no point in choosing material handling equipment or technology that you just have absolutely no room for. It’s a waste of money and time on your part. Even if you choose to resell it after you’ve realised there’s no space for it, you’ll never make your money back.

This is especially the case if it’s a second-hand forklift that is being sold privately, and not through a dealer like us here at Multy Lift. Before committing to any new material handling technology, you need to assess your needs and your premises. The questions you should be asking yourself are as follows:

  • Is there enough room for it?
  • Can it be stored when not in use?
  • Is it going to cost me money to store or keep it?
  • What are the running costs like?

Remember to put health and safety first in your warehouse

It might be easy to choose a piece of technology that is budget-friendly. However, while there are solutions that are able to suit your costs, you must make sure that you’re considering the possibility of “of you get what you pay for”. If a piece of technology or equipment is exceptionally cheap, almost to the point where it’s too good to be true, then it probably is.

If that’s the case, then you face the possibility of that piece of equipment not being safe. This is especially the case if you’re buying it second-hand from someone who isn’t a reputable dealer. When you choose to purchase a used forklift from us here at Multy Lift, you can rest assured that all of our equipment has been carefully refurbished and restored, back to its former glory.

We will then issue you with a certificate to confirm its ultimate safety. This is just one of the ways in which you can benefit from choosing Multy Lift. We have exceptional material handling equipment and solutions available.
